Yarrow (Achillea millefolium)—My grandmother said that her mother as an “herb doctor” used yarrow for folks that had inflammation in joints, and for the edema associated with gout. It was also a “female Medicine,” but she said that was none of my business. I do know that a mixture of yarrow tea and chamomile as found in herbal remedies can be effective on sore nipples and skin that is chapped by weather, which was very common years ago. The yarrow flowers, as well as the rest of the plant, can be used in a chicken soup remedy for colds and fevers, as an Elder said, “to purify the system of toxins.” A tea of yarrow is made by boiling a pint of water with an ounce of dried yarrow leaves.
